Bismarck State College Theater brought the story of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna to campus with multiple performances of “Anastasia: The Musical.” The theater performed the musical from April 10-12 at 7:30 p.m. and April 13 at 2:30 p.m. in the Sidney J. Lee Auditorium. The musical featured a large-scale cast, detailed costuming, and an intricate set design.
The cast included the talent of Schatzy Eichmann as Anastasia, Max Wild as Dmitry, and Trace Tysver as Vlad. Over 30 actors and actresses participated in the performance.
Associate Professor of Technical Theater Dean Bellin explained why BSC Theater chose “Anastasia: The Musical” as their final performance in the Sidney J. Lee.
“When we were planning on our final show in the Sidney J, we understood there was a responsibility we had,” Bellin said. “Number one, pick the right show, and number two, perform the show to the best of our ability. We really thought that ‘Anastasia’ was a show everybody would enjoy.”
He added that it wasn’t only a show that the Theater Professors wanted to make, but a show that the students wanted to make as well. He shared why “Anastasia: The Musical” was a fitting show for the end of the year.
“One of the taglines for ‘Anastasia’ was ‘a journey to the past,’ and we are taking a look back at previous productions, we’re taking a look back at previous students,” he said. “And I think that is important for us to tell because this is the end of BSC theater’s story, our journey with the Sidney J.”
The performance on April 13 would be BSC Theater’s last performance in the Sidney J. Lee Auditorium. The BSC Theater group moved to the Advanced Technology Center, where they will perform plays and musicals in the Live Event Center.
The musical was also the last production of a theater season dedicated to Mike McCormack, a long-time history professor at BSC and photographer for the BSC Theater group. Mike McCormack had been BSC Theater’s photographer for over 50 years. McCormack had passed away in August of 2024.
BSC Theater will perform plays and musicals in the Live Event Center next year, though returning to the Sidney J. Lee for the odd performance is still a possibility.
