The Bismarck State College Student Government Association is looking for ways to improve the recycling program on campus, though by doing so, they must spread awareness to students and staff that the recycling program does, in fact, exist.

Rumor had it that the recycling program did not exist, and that despite recycling items, those items would end up in the trash. Several students on campus had heard this rumor, including SGA Vice President Blaize Morris. Morris decided to investigate these rumors. She found that BSC attempts to recycle, but there are problems the campus janitors face when taking out the recycling.

Morris shared what issues the campus faced with the recycling program.

“We saw a lot of issues on campus where a lot of students weren’t recycling properly. We have issues with trash being put in the recycling bins and our janitors are struggling on campus to recycle properly.”

Morris and the SGA brought in campus janitors to discuss the issues regarding the recycling program. The janitors explained that they do recycle, but the issues with the students not properly recycling conflicts with the janitors being able to properly recycle as well.

SGA Secretary/Treasurer Kaitlyn Bancroft explained how the SGA plans to improve the BSC recycling program.

“Student government is currently working on making posters to be released on Earth Day to promote recycling and to hang them up above the recycling bins,” she said. “We’ll put in what you can recycle and what you shouldn’t recycle.”

Bancroft also listed some ways BSC itself can be a greener campus. This included using eco-friendly or biodegradable materials at the Marketplace.

As the SGA seeks to improve the recycling program and spread awareness, the rest of the campus can do their part and contribute to being a greener college.
