The Bismarck State College Mystics Cross Country team traveled to Moorhead on Sept. 13 to compete in the Dragon Twilight Invitational. The Mystics were the only junior college competing against four-year schools. Unlike other races, this meet was unique since the runners started their races at sunset and ran under the lights, which for some made the vibe more electric and fun.
The men’s team worked hard and placed third as a team in the six-kilometer race. Morgon Brindley led the team with a time of 18:59.6 and placed 25th. Ivar Martell followed close behind in 39th place, while Brody Federer and Dalton Fleckstein placed 42nd and 44th. Martell was interviewed after the race. When asked how he would rate the race, Martell gave it an 8/10.
“I liked it. I really liked it,” Martell said. “It was a bit of a maze, but that’s the beauty of cross-country, you have to look at it as a challenge. Every mile’s one foot after the other, and you gotta look at it strategically, as a race.”
The women’s team ran five-kilometers. Ava Stafford led the charge, finishing 17th with a time of 19:20.2. Lindsey Schroeder and Amelia Shepard both finished in the top 50 with Schroeder coming in 43rd and Shepard coming in 48th.
